Black History Month celebrated again at Balmville Elementary School in February 2019
Black History Month celebrated again at Balmville Elementary School in February 2019. Mrs. Beverley Johnson, Assistant Principal has been showcasing and celebrating this dynamic month for the last 24 years. Mrs. Johnson feels it is so important to share her treasures with the Balmville Community yearly.
This year through collaboration with Ms. Toie Calhoun, Health Aide gave a brilliant idea of celebrating Black Hair Over Time for the showcase. It is a hit! With Ms. Calhoun’s talent and patience made the Afro is a reality for the showcase. Ms. Calhoun stated, “For the longest time I was embarrassed by my hair texture, as well as my skin tone. Around the age of 25, I started to see my beauty. I looked in the mirror and realized I am beautiful”. Our display: Black Hair Over Time was done to encourage all little black girls to accept who they are from top to bottom. Never allow your hair texture or skin tone to define who you are NOT. To all my little Black Girls: Believe in you Black Girl Magic!!!
The display shows how nothing is really new. In researching African Culture we were able to display various styles” Cornrolls, Twist, Locks, Bantu knots and Box Braids just to name a few. Yes, “Black Hair Over Time” Celebrates Black Culture through hair.
