Newburgh Free Academy Athletes Celebrate Annual Block N Dinner


The annual Block N dinner was held recently in celebration and recognition of all graduating athletes. Goldback and Sportsmanship awards were given out for each team as well as special awards and scholarships.

Scholarship Awards 2019

 

Peter “The Great” Matthews Scholarship

Peter Paul Matthews (1933-2018) was an immigrant from Skoura, Sparta, Greece.  He came to the United States in 1951 to pursue a better future for his family.  To his children and grandchildren, he always emphasized education and athletic competition because his ancestors believed in a healthy body and mind. His family offers this scholarship in his memory to a deserving scholar-athlete to celebrate this legacy.

The recipient of this award has displayed outstanding dedication and commitment to the program at Newburgh Free Academy.  Awarded to: Christopher Cosgrove

 

Woody and Margaret Prokosch Scholarships

The Woody Prokosch (Newburgh Free Academy Class of 1938) and Margaret Prokosch (Newburgh Free Academy Class of 1947) swimming awards are given in memory of Woody Prokosch.  Mr. Prokosch was one of Newburgh’s greatest long distance swimmers and won many trophies and medals during his career for the Goldbacks.

The recipients of these awards have displayed outstanding dedication and commitment to the swimming program at Newburgh Free Academy. Awarded to: Aleksey Makarov & Chyanna Sanchez

 

City of Newburgh Fast Pitch Hall of Fame Scholarship

The City of Newburgh Softball Hall of Fame awards a scholarship to a college bound member of the Newburgh Free Academy Girls Varsity Softball team. This award will be offered in honor of Fred Moresco, a cherished member of the organization.

The recipient is a senior who actively participated and excelled in the sport of fast pitch softball with the Newburgh Free Academy Varsity Softball team.  Awarded to: Karsen Leggett

 

Jason M. Coffey Memorial Scholarship

The Jason M. Coffey Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a male swimmer or diver on the Newburgh Free Academy team.  Jason earned six varsity letters in swimming and had the highest team grade point average while taking honors and AP courses.  Jason and his father were in the Marsh & McLennan offices in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

The recipient of this award is the senior student-athlete with the highest grade point average on the team at Newburgh Free Academy.  Awarded to: Martin Peticco

 

Ralph Petrillo Sr. Memorial Scholarships

This scholarship was established to provide on a yearly basis an award that would parallel the career of Ralph Petrillo Sr. and his ideals.  This award is presented to a senior (seniors) who has displayed an exemplary work ethic both academically and athletically.  Community involvement, extracurricular activities and other achievements are important factors in determining the scholarship recipient. Awarded to: Sydney Reede

 

ANGELO CASABIANCA SCHOLARISHIP AWARD

This scholarship is in memory of Dr. Angelo Casabianca, who had a nine year battle with a rare tumor, then went on to have an organ transplant. Dr. Casabianca was a local physician whose passion was giving to his Community and helping others.

This award will be awarded to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a career in the science or medical profession and has shown leadership qualities in our Community. Awarded to: Aleksey

 

 

Special Athletic Awards 2019

 

THE CHRIS TOWNSEND “GOLDBACK STANDARD” AWARD

This award recognizes one varsity team for their accomplishments and exemplary representation of our athletic department, district and community both in the classroom and in the field of competition. Awarded to: the NFA Girls Volleyball team.

 

DANNY “BUTTERFLY” WASHINGTON GOLDBACK MANAGER AWARD

The Danny “Butterfly” Washington Goldback Manager Award is given in memory of NFA’s most loyal fan that passed away on November 20, 2011.

(Note: This award is given to a***Student*** manager of team.)

Awarded to: Jamie Forbes

 

THE STANTON HEMINGWAY MEMORIAL AWARD

This award is presented to the male or female who in the opinion of the coaches is most coachable.  He or she plans to pursue a career in physical education, athletic training or related field.

Awarded to: Tyler Serafini

 

THE D. EDWARD FITZGERALD MEMORIAL AWARDS (Academic Awards)

These awards are given in the name of the N.F.A. Class of 1920.  The winners of these awards are selected by the coaching staff.  Their selection is based on the female and male's scholastic and athletic records. Awarded to: Aleksey Makarov and Alera Jicha

 

THE DIANE HUGHES SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS

Sportsmanship is the essence of a player's attitude toward oneself, one’s school; toward the officials, coaches, opponents and spectators; toward victory and defeat; toward adulation and criticism - in short, those qualities that best represent our District. Awarded to: Kelly Hofving and Dylan Dellatore

 

THE LIEUTENANT ARCHIE STONE, JR. LOYALTY AWARDS

In choosing the recipients of this honor, tribute is paid to Archie Stone who, "on the fields of friendly strife" at N.F.A. developed the steadfast courage that later distinguished him as an officer in the United States Navy. Awarded to: Connor Leggett and Tyler Serafini

 

THE RHEA FLANNERY FLECKENSTEIN AWARD

 (In loving memory of Dr. James J. Flannery)

The pursuit of athletic excellence in the face of personally unique challenges is the mark of a true champion.  This award is given to that N.F.A. senior female athlete who persevered throughout her athletic career to overcome significant odds, to ultimately distinguish herself among her peers as a tireless competitor, consummate sportswoman and valued teammate.

Presented by the brother and teammate of Rhea Ann Flannery, N.F.A. Boys Swimming 1973-1977. Awarded to: Gabriella Palladino

 

THE CHARLIE RAPALJE SERVICE AWARD

This award will be given to the female or male student-athlete who has contributed the most to the ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ student body or Newburgh community in terms of service.  The award honors Mr. Charlie Rapalje, whose selfless service to the Newburgh community and athletic department serves as an inspiration to all who know him. Awarded to: Kameren King and Danielle Scarano

 

THE CHICK NAPOLITANO NFA SPIRIT AWARDS

In memory of Chick Napolitano, these awards will be given to one boy and one girl who have demonstrated a genuine pride and dedication for the NFA Athletic programs.

Awarded to: Luke Consani and Diamond Bullard

 

THE PETER M. POLITI, SR. MEMORIAL FOOTBALL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

Presenter: Peter Politi, Jr.

This award is given to a member of the Varsity football team who, in the opinion of his teammates, most exemplifies good sportsmanship. Awarded to: Joshua Williams

 

 

THE LIONS CLUB WATCH AWARDS

These awards are given to three outstanding females and three outstanding males who, in the opinion of their coaches, have shown exceptional athletic ability, plus sportsmanship, honors earned and scholarship. Awarded to: Terrence Anderson, Derek Iorlano, Tyler Serafini, Gabriella Palladino, Danielle Scarano, and Diamond Bullard.
