Scholars Enjoy Lunch and Legos at Newburgh Free Library
The ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ District will launched their Free Summer Meals program with a collaborative event with Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County, and local community agencies on July 2nd. Throughout the summer, the Free Summer Meals program offers breakfast and lunch at seven locations throughout Newburgh and New Windsor.
At the Newburgh Free Library location, hosts a table with activities every Tuesday during the length of the program from 11am – 1pm. Additionally, the offers programs throughout the year that sometimes coincide with meal time. Earlier this week the Newburgh Free Library facilitated a lego station during lunch time. Scholars were able to enjoy their lunch and then spend a few minutes experimenting with architecture and engineering with legos. At the library location, children and their families are encouraged to visit the library after their meal to participate in free, fun summer programs, projects and activities for families all summer long. The Free Summer Meals progam is facilitated by Mrs. Caitlin Lazarski, director of school nutrition.
Background Information on Summer Meals Program:
- Meals are FREE to children and teens ages 18 and younger who come to a summer meals site
- Food served follows USDA nutrition guidelines and is paid for by the USDA
- Summer meals sites are at schools, churches, community centers and other places that are safe for kids and teens
- Parents don’t need to apply to the program to get a free summer meal for their kids. They can just bring their child to a summer meals site in their community.
- Families can text FOOD to 877-877 or call 866-3HUNGRY to find a summer meals site in their neighborhood.
