Statement and Resources - Tragedy in Uvalde, Texas

Today, we mourn for the senseless killing of 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas at the hands of an 18-year old yesterday. We grieve for the lives that have been taken and the loss of childhood innocence as a result of this incomprehensibly violent and brutal act. Aside from educators, we are also mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, and friends of cherished children. We are all holding our loved ones especially tight today.

The district's partnership with our families has never been more important than it is today. We all want our children to feel cared for and safe in our schools, at home, and in the community. Please talk to your children if they have questions and make them feel supported, as our teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, school psychologists, and administrators will be doing the same in our schools.

The American School Counselor Association has . Additionally, the National Association of School Psychologists has also provided resources for . (see end of this message for additional language options)

The safety of our schools remains our highest priority. Each school and district building is required to submit a safety plan to the state for review each year. The plans that are posted publicly may seem vague, however, releasing detailed information would compromise the integrity of those plans. Along with our ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ school monitors, the ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ currently has five deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department working daily in and around our schools. The Town of Newburgh DARE officer is a regular presence in many of our elementary schools. Additionally, we have a good professional working relationship with multiple law enforcement agencies and value their support in helping our schools prepare for a safe learning environment. As an added measure, there will be an increased presence of local law enforcement at all school buildings throughout the day, there will be an increased vigilance of outside activity, and we are connecting with community partners to review safety plans and responses as needed.
