Summer Bridge Program at NFA West Allows Scholars to "Leave to Learn"
The Summer Bridge program at NFA West allows for incoming freshman and transfer students to get acclimated to their new high school environment. Within the program, scholars are afforded the opportunity to learn off-campus through "Leave to Learn" activities.
Mr. Joe and Ms. Kylie's scholars Leave to Learn activity was a walking tour of Newburgh following the . Students visited three sites that highlighted the contributions of the Alsdorf family in the Newburgh Community and the African American history of the city.
Ms. Jalbert's group walked to Downing Park Urban Farm where they experienced the . The scholars learned about flowers and pollinating insects from bees to Monarch butterflies. They also learned about the processes for growing and maintaining the different fruits and vegetables produced on the grounds each season. The scholars even got to pick and sample cherry tomatoes and sweet peppers.
For many of the participating scholars, the "Leave to Learn" activities opened them up to worlds and history they never knew existed within their community.
