The Newburgh Armory Hosts Second ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ Math Meet of 2022-2023
On Wednesday, December 14th, 81 ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ fifth grade scholars gathered at the Newburgh Armory to participate in the second Math Meet Competition of the 2022-2023 school year. The students were visited by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell, who spoke to the scholars on the importance of education and math. She also explained her role as the leader of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.
Scholars from all across the district were selected to participate in the competition. Nine students were selected to participate from each elementary school based on NYS Math Test Scores, iReady scores, report cards and teacher recommendation. The nine Math Meet teams are comprised of nine total scholars; one representative from each of the nine elementary schools. Within each team, students work in groups of three to solve and communicate their mathematical understanding of various problems. Scholars are scored on mathematical knowledge, strategic thinking, and communication. Points are accumulated during each competition and the winning team is announced at the culminating Escape the Room event and honored at a future Board of Education meeting.
