NFA West Campus All Male Mentoring Program learn from Eric Newton of100 Men of Newburgh
On Friday, January 26, 2018, Scholars from the NFA West All Male Mentoring Program participated in a workshop with Eric Newton, Board Member from 100 Men of Newburgh. Mr. Newton met with the young men to share his personal and professional journey. Mr. Newton started his career as a Military Police Officer, Correction Office and was a Federal Agent with the DEA. He is now a Senior Counselor with the Office of Children and Family Services. Mr. Newton will be working with the young men at West on mentoring training which will prepare them to mentor younger students at the elementary and middle schools in the ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ District. Mr. Newton started his conversation with encouraging the young men to “set a proper foundation right now which is getting the best education you can get.” He further explained that “most of the people I have had to put in prison have looked like you and me which is one of the reasons I decided to give back to young men of color”. He shared career related stories and expressed the importance of learning a skill and said that “What you don’t know will cost you and never miss an opportunity to learn something new”. Mr. Newton encouraged the young men to read and research information through technology.
Mr. Newton left the young men with three pieces of advice.
- “Educate yourself as much as possible”
- “Always feel you are the best you at what you are doing”
- “Loving yourself is the most important thing you can do and be confident”
Look out for more to come from the NFA West All Male Mentoring Program.
